CIGAR CLUB-EDUCATION-SEPT ‘25

How do Cigars get their flavors?

 Introduction:

If you’ve ever wondered why one cigar tastes like rich espresso and another like roasted nuts or black pepper—it all starts with the leaf. In this first installment of our series, we’re diving into one of the most important contributors to cigar flavor:

Tobacco leaf variety.

Not All Leaves Are Created Equal

Tobacco plants grow tall, and each section of the plant produces leaves with different strengths, burn qualities, and flavor characteristics.

Parts of the leaf

 Ligero (Top of the Plant)

  • Flavor: Strong, spicy, and full-bodied.

  • Role: Delivers the bold kick many cigar lovers crave.

  • Pro Tip: Common in blends made for seasoned smokers who enjoy a stronger hit.

 Seco (Middle of the Plant)

  • Flavor: Milder, sometimes floral, nutty, or even sweet.

  • Role: Adds complexity and aroma to a blend.

  • Pro Tip: Often balances out the strength of Ligero in a multi-leaf filler.

 Volado (Bottom of the Plant)

  • Flavor: Light and neutral.

  • Role: Used mainly to ensure a good burn.

  • Pro Tip: A solid construction leaf—your cigar wouldn’t burn evenly without it.

 Regional Tobacco Flavor Profiles

Where a tobacco leaf is grown also plays a big role in its flavor. Just like wine grapes, tobacco absorbs the essence of the soil, climate, and curing process—this is known as terroir.
